Light and Airy Deadstock Mohair Yarn

Mohair is loved for the luminous halo it creates around knitted fabric and for providing warmth without unnecessary weight. Our deadstock mohair yarn comes from limited surplus lots and can include pure compositions or refined blends, especially mohair with silk, wool or cashmere. Silk supports a light, strong strand, while wool or cashmere can add body, elasticity and softness.

A fine mohair yarn can be knitted alone for a transparent, cloud-like fabric or held together with another yarn to introduce halo, warmth and colour depth. When combining strands, the final fabric is more important than assigning a conventional yarn-weight label. Experiment with needle size and pairing on a generous gauge swatch before starting your project.

Allow the Halo to Develop

Mohair cone yarn may look flatter before its first wash because industrial spinning oils temporarily hold the fibres close to the strand. Knit directly from the cone, then gently wash and block the swatch so the halo can open. Let it dry completely before judging the texture or measuring gauge, and avoid rubbing or wringing the wet fabric. Each deadstock colour and composition is limited, so calculate the complete meterage—including all strands held together—before buying.
